「クリスチャン・アストロロジー」の原文は時々、どこがどうなってるのということがしばしば。

whether 節はどこまででしょう？

 

まずsheが主語、 inquiredが動詞、whether以下が目的語。

「女性が、whether以下のことを尋ねたなら」

と訳せます。

whether　A　or   B

「AかBであるか」

というのが直訳です。

なのでwhether以下は

whether she should have found a Party at home, yea or not,

（Partyの意味は人）

 

「その女性は、人が家にいて会えるかどうか」

 

と訳せます。

 

ここでwhether節が終わりと考えてはだめです。

 

それ以下の関係詞節

 

to whom she had no relation, but as to a stranger;

 

がくっ付いてきます。

 

この関係詞はどこに係っているでしょうか。

 

これは

 

a Partyに係ります。

 

間に、at home ,yea or not

 

があるので、分かりずらい。

 

to whom she had no relation,

 

を元に戻すと

 

she had no relation　to  him

 

「その女性はその人と血縁関係にない」

 

ということです。

というのは基礎的な知識で

とは訳しません。

 

ですのでwhether以下の構造は

yea or not,

［　］が 　O’である Partyに係ります。

 

 

 

ですので、訳は

「しかし、女性が、その女性と血縁関係になく、他人である人が家にいて会えるかどうかと尋ねたなら、」

 

となります。

ここまでがif節で、whether節はwhetherからここまで。

とにかく、関係詞がどこに係っているのというのは、よく見かけます。

 

単語はすごく重要ですが、構文をしっかり取るということをしないと、正確に訳せないといったことが生じる場合があります。
